"Sandie" Contemporary Horse Portrait by
Arizona Artist Mary Opat

14" x 18" Oil on Canvas

I've decided to paint a series of horses and this is the first one.  I was going
to try for a loose effect, but I think it goes against my nature.
Maybe the next one!  This painting has been SOLD.

"Red Skirts" Contemporary Landscape and Figurative Oil Paintings by Arizona Artist Mary Opat

"Skirts" Contemporary Figurative Oil Painting by
Arizona Artist Mary Opat

14" x 18" Oil on Canvas  $395.00

Here's another painting that was started on Tuesday.  It kind of fits with
my last few figurative paintings of ladies with brightly colored clothing.
I'll put it aside for a few days and make changes after looking at it with fresh eyes.
Inspiration was from another photo taken by "World Traveler Gailen Frysinger.
Please visit http://www.maryopat.com to see more of my work.
I'll be adding more paintings soon.

Gilbert Art Benches

I have decided to "throw my hat in ring" with other local artists
to create one of many art benches for downtown Gilbert.  An
application process is submitted by the artist. Local business owners
and organizations have the opportunity to select an artist and
will have an input on the design.  The benches will be
a tactile and practical way to bring more art to the downtown area.
The number of benches will depend on how many sponsors
participate. I'll make updates if I'm chosen.  Stayed tuned!

Art on display

Art at Cholewka Law Office

Today I made a trip to the great town of Gilbert to hang a few of
my paintings at the Cholewka Law Office.  The two paintings
on the outside are mine and the painting in the middle is by Barb J.
We placed about a dozen pieces today.  Thank you to the folks at the
law office for being so supportive of GVAL.  After we hung the
paintings we went upstairs to Art Intersection to view the
artwork currently on display.  Art Intersection is a wonderful
addition to Gilbert.  Its nice to have so much local support
for area artists.

"Portrait of Alexis" Contemporary Landscape and Figurative Oil Paintings by Arizona Artist Mary Opat

12"x12" Oil on Canvas

I've been working on this portrait of my Granddaughter
Alexis for the past few days.  I may make some changes
to it after it dries, but for now I think I'd better
put my brush down.  I sometimes don't know when to quit!

12"x12" Oil on Paper "Street Reflections #1

These are the first of a series of four subtractive paintings.  The process
involved prepping a special paper with modeling paste and then painting
a layer of cadmium yellow deep and letting it dry.  A layer of
burnt umber was applied to cover completely and then wiped away
in some places revealing the gold color underneath.  The white lights and
green/red reflections were added last.

"Portrait" Contemporary Landscape and Figurative Paintings by Arizona Artist Mary Opat

This is a portrait that I started a couple of days ago and finished this morning.
I actually had trouble painting from the same photo earlier, so I trashed that one and started over.
The painting has a lot of texture in the sweater that I can't seem to capture in the photo.  I
really need to figure out how to get more accurate photos of my work!

Mary's Pick for "Art Blog of the Month"

At the beginning of each month I'm going offer a link (with permission, of course), to a blog published by one of my friends or relatives.  It may be a personal blog site or a web site from a local business or organization I'm familiar with that supports the arts.  So I'm urging my friends to keep those sites updated!  Look for the first link on June 1st.

"River Walk" Contemporary Landscape and Figurative Oil Paintings by Arizona Artist Mary Opat

This painting is of the River Walk in San Antonio.  Several members of my family and I
were able to get together to celebrate Phil's graduation and the beginning of his
career in the Air Force a few years ago.  We have a family joke that "in San Antonio, all roads
lead to the Alamo".  It seemed that whenever we took a wrong turn, we ended up
at the Alamo and River Walk, so we just went with THAT plan!

Pieces of My Past

Here is my favorite easel, the one that Grandpa Noonan made for me years ago
when I was in high school.  Dad had just bought me my first set of paints and
a roll of canvas.  The easel is on my "painting table".  It's a table also made by Grandpa
which once served as a small kitchen table in their home.
I put together a new "big girl" easel today.  Only had a few parts left over!

"Plein-Air Study" Contemporary Landscape and Figurative Oil Paintings by Arizona Artist Mary Opat

10" x 10" Original Oil Painting

This is a study I painted in the gardens at East Side Gallery on
April 21st.  It was a wonderful relaxing day with
good friends surrounded by nature.  I tried to
capture the colors and textures of the plants in the
foreground and decided to accentuate the sculptural quality
by eliminating the plants in the background.  You can check

Scottsdale Artist School Workshop

April 30th through May 2nd five members of the Gilbert Visual Art League
attended a landscape workshop by Dick Heichberger called "Landscape Painting
from Photographs".  Below is an example of the many unfinished quick studies I did
from reference photographs.  Jean, Bev, Barb, Jen and I were apparently
so into his method of painting that we forgot to take a group photo!
I'll be finishing this painting and offering it next fall in the local art shows.  To see

The Heritage District Mural is Finished!

Recent News

Unveiling of Heritage Depot Plaza’s New Art Mural and Open Space by Gilbert Leadership Class XXI’s at Grand Opening Celebration
WHO:   Participants of Gilbert Leadership Class XXI will celebrate the unveiling of their community project which includes an art mural painted on the south-facing wall of the American Legion Merrill Mitchell Post 39 and an open space improvement with park features in the once-vacant lot immediately south of the mural. The mural depicts the Town of Gilbert in the World War I era, circa 1917, with the exception of the “Gilbert” sign, which was later added across Gilbert Road in the early 1930’s. To further enhance the project, a plaque has been created to explain the significance of the site and will be incorporated in the Heritage District History Walk created by last year’s Gilbert Leadership Class XX. Various private donors, including members of the current class, and Gilbert Leadership alumni and past Town Council members John Sentz and Linda Abbott have purchased benches for installation in the open space.
WHAT: To honor the new space, a celebration will take place with an official program, including remarks by  Mayor John Lewis of the Town of Gilbert; Commander Skip Erickson of the American Legion Merrill Mitchell Post 39; Mary Ellen Fresquez, Member of the Gilbert Historical Museum Board of Directors; and Kathy Tilque, President/CEO of the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce.  Joining the ceremony is local, seasoned artist and Gilbert Visual Art League member, Mary Opat, who assisted Class XXI to craft the mural design.  Opat will be recognized for her visionary design and contribution to the class project.
The celebration will coincide with other events within Gilbert’s Heritage District, including:
  • American Legion Merrill Mitchell Post 39 will host a dinner fundraiser, including the sale of a burger or fried fish/shrimp, fries or onion rings and a drink for $6 per person.
  • Joe’s Real BBQ’s Customer Appreciation Day – free meals will be served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and again from 4 p.m. to 7p.m. Book donations are suggested.
  • Gilbert Fourth Annual ArtFest hosted by Gilbert High School – Celebrating 100 years of Gilbert Public Schools. A walking tour within the Heritage District will be held between 4:30p.m. -7:30 p.m.

Painting Day with the Gilbert Leadership Class

The April 6th painting day with the Gilbert Leadership Class XXI was a success!  Most of the mural wall got covered with paint and I'll begin adding details next week.  The group was dedicated and fun to work with.  The "pocket park" area next to the mural wall looks amazing with the new plants, rock and curbing.  Terracotta colored Benches will be added soon.  It will be fun to see a before and after when everything is completed! "Two for the Road" Contemporary Landscape and Figurative Oil Paintings by Arizona Artist Mary Opat

22" x 28" Oil Painting
I finished this one today.  I used a photo taken by Galen Frysinger
while visiting Tombstone, AZ and a rock wall from my imagination.
I like the play of light and shadow on the rocks and the way the horses
have cast shadows from their tack.  For more of my
paintings, follow this link to:

Salt River Canyon

I've been working on the mural in Gilbert most of the week.  My neighbor asked me to come with her on a road trip 'to get some honey butter in Strawberry'.  What started out to be a short trip turned into an eight hour tour of the best scenery in Arizona!  We went past Red Mountain to Payson and then around the loop through the Salt River Canyon to Globe and Superior and several small mining towns along the way.  The wild flowers are blooming in the desert and the mountains are covered in tall pines. Here are a few pictures of  Salt River Canyon.  It's a winding road of switchbacks down into the valley and then back up.  It's off to work now on the prep for the mural.

"Midnight Blues" and "City Lights" Contemporary Landscape and Figurative Oil Paintings by Arizona Artist Mary Opat

These are two paintings I added to my web pages.  They are
both a deep midnight blue and are subtractive paintings.
The surface was prepared using modeling paste
to give them a unique texture.  A coat of deep blue paint was applied
and then removed with a rag to show the white underneath.

Some of my favorite Artists

                                             Bev                         Barb                       Jean

Here are paintings from some of my favorite artists.
I am very lucky to be able to call them my friends and
paint with them on a regular basis. Yesterday ten members of the
Gilbert Visual Art League met at Scottsdale for the Celebration of Fine Art.
100 artists under one roof, selling and demonstrating their art.  It was a
fun day and an eye opener.  I picked up some pointers and am ready
to put them into practice!

"Cottage at Dawn" by Contemporary Landscape and Figurative Arizona Artist Mary Opat

18" x 14" Original Oil on Canvas

This is a painting that I have added to Contemporary Fine
Art International and Fine Art America.  It reminded me of
fishing at Five Island Lake and of course visits to Okoboji!

"Keeping Watch" Contemporary Landscape and Figurative Oil Paintings by Arizona Artist Mary Opat

16x20 Original Oil Painting on Canvas

This is a painting that I just added to my websites.  It reminds
me of the creek that ran through our acreage.  Blue Heron,
wood ducks, and mallards would visit.
Grandpa Wes' bridge spanned the creek allowing the
kids to cross over and race their boats (sometimes
just sticks) down the creek.  The bridge built by Wes has been
refurbished and is now being used in
Chatfield, MN thanks to the Opat boys!

"Blazing Sky" by Contemporary Landscape and Figurative Arizona Artist Mary Opat

This original oil painting has been sold.  I'm working on a similar
painting using the "setting sun" colors.  It was the first time using
a relatively smooth RayMar panel.  I think the smooth panels make
water reflections easier to achieve and I'll be using them more often.
